With all the food and holiday parties, it’s easy to put on weight. Whether you’re trying to shed the holiday pounds or have a healthy start to the New Year, a pool can help. Swimming has been touted as one of the best forms of exercise to achieve these results. Water provides resistance that air does not, so swimming provides the following benefits:
- Increased fat burn
- Full body toning (core, hips, arms, shoulders and glutes)
- Maximizes your cardio
Swimming is an activity any age can do, and is even great for those with disabilities or joint pain–water provides buoyancy offering an increased range of motion and swimming is a low impact activity.
When it comes to swimming and pool exercises there are different kinds–and each provides different benefits and calorie burn:
1. Lap Swimming
Lap swimming works best in pools with unobstructed swim corridors. Check out Leisure Pools range of swimming pool options–we have many with this feature. Swimming laps is one of the best cardiovascular activities and perfect for building endurance and stamina. Another benefit? Both the freestyle and breaststroke are great fat-burning strokes.
2. Water Aerobics
Water aerobics is great for getting your heart rate up, but it also is great for strength training and toning. Items like kick boards, pool noodles and buoyant dumbbells provide resistance for strengthening muscles.
3. Water Jogging
If you get tired of lap swimming and are looking to change it up, water jogging is a great option. You still receive same great cardiovascular benefits, and the resistance will help tone your arms and legs.
4. Pool Games
There are many other opportunities for exercise in swimming pools. Simple things like playing with your kids in the pool or organizing a game of pool volleyball with friends can help keep you fit. Pools provide endless opportunities for health and wellness!
As you consider a swimming pool purchase for health reasons, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to also find that the fun and happiness you have in a pool also has major health benefits.
Research from the Harvard School of Public Health sheds light on how happiness can, indeed, lead to not only health benefits, but a longer life. The excitement of splashing in a pool can protect your heart. And the laughter of enjoying pool-side sunshine can reduce your chance of diabetes or hypertension.
Studies have shown that happiness can also strengthen your immune system. Researchers wanted to investigate why happy people are less susceptible to illness. In a 2003 experiment, 350 adults volunteered to get exposed to the common cold. Before exposure, researchers called them six times in two weeks and asked how much they had experienced nine positive emotions—such as feeling energetic, pleased, and calm—that day. After five days in quarantine, the participants with the most positive emotions were less likely to have developed a cold.
Swimming pools can be a great source of happiness–and health–whether using pools for exercise or splashing around with family and friends. As a pool owner, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that your pool isn’t just beautiful to look at, or fun to swim in, it can also provide lasting health benefits, and even prolong your life.
