Summer is right around the corner, and before you know it, your kids will be excited to get in the pool! Swimming is a healthy activity for kids with many benefits, and teaches valuable skills, but you want to be sure that as your kids enjoy the water safely. We’ve put together a list of tips that can help your children be safe both in and out of the water:
1. Start Early
You can start introducing babies to water when they are about 6 months old. While they won’t be able to swim, they will be able to encounter the water and get comfortable with it.
2. Swimming Lessons
Swimming lessons are a great way to have kids learn swimming skills and water safety. There are many benefits to swimming lessons, including improving social skills, conquering fears, becoming more independent and self-sufficient, and increasing athleticism and coordination.
3. Learn CPR
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is an invaluable tool for swimmers of every age. In the event that someone begins to drown, all it take is for one person to know CPR to save a life.
4. Don’t Use Floaties
You may think floaties, the inflatable flotation devices that parents often put on kids arms, are a good idea for small swimmers. But, many websites actually advise against them, stating that they hinder the child in learning to swim properly. Do some research to help make your decision before you put floaties on the kids’ arms.
5. Play Games
Keep the lessons fun! Playing fun games and using water toys is a great way to keep children interested in learning to swim. Games and toys also work when kids are simply having fun in the pool, too!
6. Shallow End
There’s nothing wrong with the shallow end. Stay at the level that you/your kids are comfortable with. If children are beginners, keep them in the shallow end until they are ready to move into deeper water.
7. Wear sunscreen!
